Job Description
You'll be stepping into a validated
education
al model that's actively transforming student performance at Alpha School. LearnWithAI powers the platform underneath, scaling rapidly throughout the US and internationally. Students achieve mastery of core subjects in just two hours daily and consistently rank in the highest national percentiles. The approach is proven. What's needed now is someone who thinks first and always about the people using it.
Your role
will be to establish what excellent design means, define those standards, and construct the capability from the ground up. Your domain includes our learning platform and its ecosystem of supporting applications, serving diverse user groups both within and outside Alpha. Consider a five-year-old who hasn't learned to read and is discovering numbers through a system that must make discovery feel like fun. Think about a teenager working two grades below level, regaining trust after years of struggle—a single unclear interaction could undo that progress. Picture a parent who finally understands their child's learning journey. That transparency reduces worry and turns them into capable advocates. Imagine an academic coach overseeing a multi-age classroom who needs visibility into advancement without information overload. You must know each group intimately enough to design meaningfully distinct experiences for them. Your responsibility is the interface layer: investigate each user segment with genuine rigor, translate those insights into design standards that engineers can implement immediately, and deliver code-ready outputs that launch now, not concepts that languish in feedback cycles. You collaborate with product owners accountable for results and engineers who deploy features. You challenge decisions that compromise user quality. You take full accountability. You'll apply AI as a force multiplier to accelerate iteration and expand coverage, but your expertise, not the tool's initial suggestion, determines what launches. Primary emphasis remains our
education
platform, with periodic work in additional areas. What You Will Be Doing • Conduct user research spanning radically different audiences and establish design principles that reflect that understanding • Construct and sustain design systems embedded within each product's native UI framework, enabling faster engineering delivery and cumulative design value instead of scattered efforts • Develop functional prototypes that allow product owners to validate choices in days rather than weeks • Evaluate existing products through the user lens: identify experience failures, pinpoint engagement costs, determine high-impact improvements • Shape design culture within the organization: establish feedback mechanisms, clarify trade-off evaluation, determine which standards are non-negotiable • Collaborate with product owners and engineering teams, challenge decisions that degrade user experience What You Won’t Be Doing • Setting product strategy; product owners control that domain, you guarantee the experience delivers it • Creating static design files requiring code translation • Focusing on a single product; your scope encompasses the entire portfolio • Executing predefined design briefs; you synthesize direction from ambiguous inputs and begin design work with partial information • Waiting for approval; you possess the mandate to detect and resolve UX issues independently Basic
